Commissioner
Iron Range Resources
Governor Tim Pawlenty named Sandy Layman commissioner of Iron Range Resources in May 2003 and reappointed her to a second four-year term in January, 2007.
Iron Range Resources is a state agency headquartered in Eveleth, Minnesota, which is charged with developing the resources of the state’s mining region, a geographical area encompassing approximately 13,000 square miles. Layman had previously served on the Board of Iron Range Resources, having been twice appointed by Minnesota’s Speaker of the House as a citizen representative.
Prior to her current appointment, Layman was employed as president of Itasca Development Corporation; a nonprofit economic development organization based in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and, prior to that, as President of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to her work at the agency, Layman is actively involved in rural development through service on the boards of the Center for Rural Policy and Development, based in St. Peter, and the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Natural Resources Research Institute, and she recently retired from twelve years as a trustee of the Blandin Foundation.
Layman grew up in Minneapolis and moved to northern Minnesota in 1977 with her husband, Bill, where they have raised two sons. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management and Communications from Concordia University in St. Paul and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas.
